From Skate Shop Stickers to a Vinyl Graphics Vision

Our story begins at the local skate shop’s sticker counter - where a passion for custom vinyl stickers and decals first took hold. We spent our lunch money collecting stickers, saving the best ones, and slapping the rest on skateboards, notebooks, and anything in sight.

As we got older, that passion grew with us. Cars became our new canvas. Road trips to Southern California beaches, Hawaii, and Las Vegas fueled our creativity—and our sticker collection only got bigger.

How Vinyl Mayhem Started in the Vinyl Graphics Industry

In 1996, while working at a restaurant and figuring out life’s direction, one of our founders connected with someone in the automotive graphics industry. That introduction opened the door to vinyl signs, lettering, and visual advertising—and sparked the idea for what would become Vinyl Mayhem.

We began producing plotter-cut vinyl stickers (vinyl transfer decals) and custom lettering for local shops and businesses, creating car window graphics and signage that stood out.

From Ska Bands to Surf, Skate, and Apparel Brands

Not long after, a chance meeting at a Ska show led to working with the band The Aquabats!. That opportunity opened the door to designing stickers for other Southern California bands like Reel Big Fish, and eventually expanded into surf, skate, and apparel brands.

Our roots in music and action sports culture helped shape the creative direction that still defines our work today.

Inspired by Madness - The Name Vinyl Mayhem

As the business grew, we needed a name that matched our energy. With vinyl as our core medium and endless creative possibilities ahead - from decals to vehicle graphics - we wanted something bold and memorable.

Inspired by one of our favorite bands, Madness, the name came naturally: Vinyl Mayhem.

Entering the Automotive Graphics & Custom Decal Scene

When our music clients signed record deals, merchandise production shifted to larger labels. While that chapter closed, another opportunity opened.

The import car scene was exploding.

With our own Honda Civic project car, we began designing and installing custom automotive graphics and racing-inspired decals. That shift into car culture became a defining moment for Vinyl Mayhem - and continues to influence our brand today.

Making an Impact at Battle of the Imports

In 1998, we attended Battle of the Imports with several vehicles featuring our custom graphics. That exposure led to connections with motorsport and performance companies, opening the door to new collaborations and larger-scale projects.

From SEMA to the Fast and the Furious

Our work eventually earned us invitations to the SEMA Show in Las Vegas - one of the largest automotive trade events in the world.

We even had the opportunity to consult on the original Fast and the Furious film before production began - an unforgettable milestone in our journey.
